Self-guiding or mushing is the most common way of running husky tours in Levi. The feeling of mushing a team of dogs elevates your husky experience and builds a strong connection between the musher and the dogs. This is the best way to understand the dogs.
Mush it, love it, live it!
Get ready for an amazing adventure, because mushing with us is all about
fun and simplicity. Our 5 km and 10 km husky safaris are
self-driven, meaning you’re in control! Don’t worry—it’s easier than you think, and we’re here to make sure you enjoy every second of it.
Our
sleds are small and light, perfectly designed for a smooth ride. They can fit
2 adults and one child up to 7 years old. These lightweight sleds make it easy to zip through the snow, but they have some weight limits, so our kennel team leader will help ensure the seating works for everyone. Our priority is always a safe and comfortable ride for both you and the dogs.
We keep
group sizes small, with just
5 husky teams per ride. That’s
10 people max, unless there are families with little ones, in which case we might have a few more. This small group size ensures a cozy, personal experience.
Mushing on your own elevates your adventure, creating a real connection between you and the dogs. It’s the perfect way to understand these amazing animals; after the ride, that bond makes your interaction with them even more special.
Once you’ve got that down, just focus on the thrill of steering your own team, and soak in the experience. Picture yourself in the shoes of a polar explorer from the Alaska Gold Rush, feeling the freedom of the arctic wilderness as you glide through breathtaking scenery. Trust us — mushing is really easy!
Our track takes you through a mix of forest paths and across the frozen Ounasjoki River. The landscapes are incredibly diverse, and sky can have astonishing colors.
Our kennel is located in a peaceful Lappish village, just a short half-hour drive from Levi center, right by the Ounasjoki River—one of the longest in Finland.
The heart of our kennel belongs to Mari and Kari-Matti, professional mushers and breeders who live side by side with their 50 Alaskan and Siberian huskies.
These dogs are known for their strength, speed, and endurance. They are professionally trained and love running and pulling sleds.
The owners ensure their dogs get the perfect balance of work, rest, and food, keeping them in high spirits — and that is shared with you during the husky experience.
After the ride, there’s plenty of time to pet your huskies and meet the rest of the pack. If you’re lucky, you might even meet some puppies!
Inside our warm, cozy hut, you can enjoy a cup of hot berry juice, munch on cookies, and hear stories about the kennel and life with the huskies. It’s the perfect way to round off your experience.
Availability for December - early January:
Quick and thrilling, perfect for those who want a taste of dog sledding without committing to a longer ride. It lasts about 20-30 minutes—a short but exhilarating journey through the stunning Lapland wilderness.
For those who want to dive deeper into the experience, this option offers double the distance and double the adventure, lasting about 45-60 minutes—perfect for true outdoor enthusiasts.
If you’re a group of three — two adults and one child over 7 years old — one of you will need to ride as a passenger in another sled, which will be driven either by one of our guides or another group member.
Most families prefer to share a sled with their child, while the other adult enjoys a ride in another sled.
If your child is older (15-16yo+) and more confident, our husky guide will decide if he or she can try driving the sled themselves. Single-driving options aren’t available on our 5 km safari, but if you’re on the 10 km safari, you can drive a single sled for an extra charge.
Warm winter clothing is essential. If you need to rent gear, it’s available before departure at our Safarimarket office in Levi Center.
On colder days (below -20°C), we also recommend using no-water-based winter cream and covering exposed skin. Hand and foot warmers are a great idea too — they’re available at most supermarkets in Levi and at our Safarimarket. Goggles are recommended, so bring your own, as we don’t provide them.
Be sure to arrive 20-30 minutes before your pick-up time to get fitted.
One tip: take off your gloves when you’re playing with the huskies—they love them, and they might try to keep them as a souvenir!
Huskies are naturally friendly and absolutely love people! We do ask that you avoid feeding them, as they receive carefully rationed food and water throughout the day to keep them in top condition.
This tour is perfect for everyone, whether you’re a family, a group of friends, or a couple looking for an exciting escape.
We can't wait to share this experience with you!
Tell us your wishes and we'll help you to choose the right activities for your family.
